Joe DePastino enters the 2008 season in his first season as manager of the West Michigan Whitecaps while also making his professional coaching debut. DePastino spent the past two years volunteering his time coaching at Sarasota High School while rehabbing his back after his playing career ended in 2005 with Triple-A Syracuse.
Selected by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round of the 1992 amateur draft out of high school, DePastino enjoyed a 14-year (1992-05) career as a catcher in the minor leagues with a brief time in the Majors with the New York Mets. Throughout his playing career, DePastino gained experience in six different organizations including the Red Sox, Mets, Astros, Yankees, Braves, Blue Jays. In 2003, he reached the Majors and appeared in two games for the Mets. He finished his career in 2005 with a .265 average, 87 home runs and 468 RBI in 944 minor league games. Joe resides in Sarasota, Fla. with his wife Amy and their two children Rocco and Gia.
